Reinhold Krohn (born November 25, 1852 in Hamburg , † June 29, 1932 in Danzig - Langfuhr ; full name: Reinhold Friedrich Karl Krohn ) was a German civil engineer and university professor .

Life

Reinhold Krohn studied civil engineering at the Polytechnic Karlsruhe and the Polytechnic Aachen from 1869 to 1873 . In Karlsruhe he joined the Landsmannschaft Frisa , later the Corps Frisia , in Aachen the newly founded Landsmannschaft Teutonia , later the Corps Teutonia . After completing his studies, he initially took on various positions at authorities and construction offices in Hamburg before returning to the Aachen University as an assistant in 1876 . In 1878 he became a private lecturer and in 1881 professor for statics and read in particular about the theory of statically indeterminate frameworks , movable bridges and graphic statics. From 1884 to 1886 he gained further practical professional experience as a bridge construction engineer in the USA, which was then leading in bridge construction. In 1887 he returned to Germany and worked until 1904 as chief engineer and later as head of the Sterkrade bridge construction company at Gutehoffnungshütte , which under his leadership developed into the largest bridge construction company in Germany and built numerous bridges at home and abroad. In 1904 he was one of the founding members of the Association of German Bridge and Iron Construction Factories , which was renamed the German Iron Construction Association in 1913 and the German Steel Construction Association in 1928 .

In the same year, 1904, when the Technical University of Gdansk was founded, he was appointed professor for statics and bridge construction at the new university, where he taught and researched until his retirement . From 1907 to 1909 he was rector of the Technical University of Gdansk. Technically, he and Georg Christoph Mehrtens propagated the use of flux iron instead of welding iron in steel construction . Scientifically, he established the principle of the reciprocity of displacements in the calculation of bridge structures and further developed the theoretical principles of modern bridge construction.
