Hermann Werner von der Asseburg

Hermann Werner Franziskus Gottlieb Freiherr von der Asseburg zu Hinnenburg (born February 17, 1702 in Paderborn ; † June 21, 1779 in Hinnenburg ) was Prime Minister of the Electorate of Cologne . He also held various offices in the Principality of Paderborn .

family

He came from the Westphalian line to Hinnenburg of the von der Asseburg family . The father was Ernst Konstantin von der Asseburg. The mother was Lucia Odilia Franziska von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht. One of his brothers was Wilhelm Anton von der Asseburg , Bishop of Paderborn . He himself was married twice. His first wife was Theresia von Droste, who died in 1734. His second wife was Theresa von der Lippe zu Vinsebeck . With this he had three daughters.

Life

He was temporarily a favorite of Elector Clemens August of Bavaria . He was Imperial and Electoral Cologne Privy Councilor. After the dismissal of Prime Minister August Wilhelm von Wolff-Metternich , the cabinet system was again replaced by the conference system at the head of the state. In 1751 von der Asseburg became Minister of State and Conference of the Electorate of Cologne and Chief Steward. As such, he was largely responsible for electoral politics. He represented the French and anti-Habsburg parties at court. But he fell out of favor as early as 1755. The previous State Secretary Gottfried Josef von Raesfeld took over the management of politics . He was also the Prince-Bishop of Paderborn, Obermarschall and Oberjägermeister, Drost zu Ruthe , Wewelsburg and Wonneberg .

Between 1736 and 1745, he had Hinnenburg Palace redesigned in the Baroque style, especially the interior . In addition, the south wing was extended and a baroque garden was created. As a replacement for Schermke, which was sold to the Prussian state at the beginning of the 18th century, he got the Hollwinkel estate in the Principality of Minden in 1758 , which he sold again in 1776. He came into possession of Gut Menzel through marriage. His daughter Maria Therese married Theodor Werner von Bocholtz . His second son Hermann Werner called himself Count von Bocholtz-Asseburg as heir . There is a portrait of him that Anton Joseph Stratmann painted.
