Hermenegildo da Cruz

Hermenegildo do G. da Cruz (born April 5, 1977 in Fatumasi , Bazartete , East Timor ) is Superintendente Xefe (Chief Commissioner) of the East Timorese National Police (PNTL).

Career

Cruz grew up in Bazartete ( Liquiçá ). His father was murdered when Hermenegildo was five days old. His mother raised him, his two brothers and his sister alone. She worked in coffee plantations and sold goods in the market to enable all children to go to school.

After graduating from high school, Cruz attended Dili University , where he was elected student council coordinator and became an activist for East Timor's independence from Indonesia . The crisis in East Timor in 1999 before the occupation forces withdrew, interrupted his studies. When the Australian- run INTERFET landed and restored order and quiet, Cruz returned to Bazartete. His mother then encouraged him to join the new police force.

After his training, Cruz became a patrol officer and then an investigative officer. Here he worked with the United Nations police in Liquiçá. Cruz learned to speak English fluently and eventually became a PNTL trainer himself in 2001 at the Police Training Center in Dili.

After the 2006 riots in East Timor , Cruz wanted to improve his academic knowledge and successfully applied for an Australia Awards scholarship. He then graduated with honors from Flinders University with a bachelor's degree in criminology and international relations. Upon his return, Cruz was appointed district commander of the PNTL in Bobonaro . On January 30, 2015, he was promoted to national director of the Polícia Científica de Investigação Criminal PCIC ( German  criminal police ).

Cruz is currently (as of 2018) responsible for training new police recruits and the community police. In addition to his service, he organizes donations for the population through his contacts in Australia.
