history

Metagou Church

Ulmera was one of the traditional kingdoms of Timor, ruled by a liurai . The Tetum- dominated empire appears on a list by Afonso de Castro, a former governor of Portuguese Timor , who listed 47 empires in 1868.

In the spring of 1861 one of the revolts of 1861 against the Portuguese colonial rule broke out here against forced labor on public projects . Governor Afonso de Castro struck them down in September of the same year. It is speculated that Dom Carlos, the Liurai of Maubara , had incited the Ulmera Empire into rebellion. Despite good persuasion from the Dutch, he had not come to terms with the Portuguese as the new masters.

In 1863 there was an uprising in Fatumasi. In the suppression, the Portuguese were supported here by the ruler of Ermera . In 1889 a customs post was established in Ai Pelo .

On 7 December the 1975 landed Ponta Tibar heavy landing craft of the Indonesians . This was part of the invasion that led to the occupation of East Timor.

At the end of 1979 there were Indonesian camps for East Timorese in Leorema, Raucassa (Suco Lauhata), Tibar and in the town of Bazartete, who were to be relocated by the occupiers for better control. The population fell in the administrative office between 1970 and 1980 from 16,610 to 8,997 by 45.8%.

The then sub-district of Bazartete was the scene of intimidation, rape and murder by members of the Besi Merah Putih militia during the unrest before and after the independence referendum in 1999 . For two weeks the BMP terrorized the population and forced many to flee to West Timor or deported the people there. In Fatumasi, 70 to 80% of the buildings were destroyed. Most of the buildings in Vila de Liquiçá were also damaged. On October 13, an Australian infantry company was stationed in the deserted city as a backup . Only gradually did the residents return.

On May 24th, during the riots in East Timor in 2006 , fighting broke out between members of the East Timor’s Defense Forces and mutinous soldiers.
