Before the 2015 regional reform, Leorema had an area of ​​22.42 km². Now it is 26.70 km². The Suco is located in the southwest of the administrative office of Bazartete. To the north are the Sucos Metagou and Fatumasi , to the northeast of the Suco Fahilebo . West, the Office of Administration is Liquiçá with its Sucos Luculai , Darulete and Açumanu and south of the community to Ermera associated administrative offices Ermera with his Suco Ponilala and Railaco Subdistrict with its Sucos Matata and Liho . In the northeast the river Pahiklan rises , later called the border river to Fahilebo Ermela . It flows into the Anggou , which forms a small piece of the border with Liho. The rivers are part of the Rio Comoro system . The Gleno , a tributary of the Lóis, flows along the border with Ponilala .

In the northeast is the village of Buku Mera ( Bucumera ), near the mountain Foho Buku Mera ( 1079  m ). To the west of this is Cutulau ( Kutulau ), to the south of Urema and Baura , which is divided into two settlements northwest and southeast of Urema. In the south are the villages of Ergoa , Ecapo , Fatuhou , Urluli ( Urtuli ), Fatunero ( Patunero ), Manu-Lete ( Manulete ) and Railuli . There are primary schools in Buku Mera, Urema, Ecapo ( Escola Primaria Ecapo ) and Railuli. There is also an emergency helicopter station in the north and a medical station in Ecapo.

North of the city of Cutulau with lies 1410  m highest mountain in the municipality Liquiçá which Foho Cutulau ( Foho Kutulau ). The mountain Fatumasin ( 1369  m ), located to the south-west of it, is densely forested and its soils are poor in lime. It belongs to a nature reserve that has been declared an Important Bird Area with at least 15 protected bird species . The reserve is 13,618 hectares and extends into the municipality of Ermera. In addition to those on Monte Mundo Perdido and Tatamailau , the reserve is one of the three most important orchid protection areas in the country.

In the Suco there are the ten Aldeias Baura , Bucumera , Cutulau , Ergoa , Fatunero , Hatu-Hou , Manu-Lete , Railuli , Urema and Urluli .

Residents

The Suco has 5409 inhabitants (2015), of which 2750 are men and 2659 women. The population density is 202.6 inhabitants / km². There are 987 households in the Suco. Over 90% of the residents state Mambai as their mother tongue. Over 7% speak Tetum Prasa , almost 1.5% Tokodede and a small minority Kemak .

history

At the end of 1979 there was an Indonesian transit camp for East Timorese in Leorema , who were to be relocated by the occupiers for better control.

Leorema was the scene of rape and murder by the pro-Indonesian militia Besi Merah Putih in September 1999 during the unrest following the independence referendum . The BMP hunted the population for two weeks. On September 7th, a man was shot dead by the BMP and his wife, like other civilians, was deported to West Timor .

politics

In the elections of 2004/2005 was Leandro Lobato elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections won Alberto da Costa Freitas .

Personalities

The family of the politician and freedom fighter Nicolau dos Reis Lobato comes from Leorema . His sister, the politician Lúcia Lobato , was born here. In 1964 the politician António da Conceição was born in Leorema and in 1974 the politician Leandro Lobato.
