Ján Bahýľ

Ján Bahýľ (born May 25, 1856 in Zvolenská Slatina , † March 13, 1916 in Pressburg ) was a Slovak engineer, inventor and designer, he received a patent for a helicopter in 1895 .

Life

Ján Bahýľ was born in Zvolenská Slatina, then the Kingdom of Hungary . He attended high school in Altsohl , in 1869 he graduated from the mining and forestry academy in Schemnitz and then joined the Hungarian armed forces . There they became aware of his talents and recommended him to visit the Austro-Hungarian Technical Military Academy in Vienna , which he graduated in 1879 with the rank of lieutenant and the professional title of kuk Mil . Then Bahýľ worked as a civil engineer in the Kingdom of Hungary and filed several patents. He married Rozália Schwanzerová in Pressburg in 1892, from this marriage come the daughters Frida and Wilhelmina and his son Gustav. Bahýľ died in Pressburg in 1916 and found his final resting place there at the Kozia brána cemetery .

Inventions

As early as 1897 he carried out his first flight attempts on the Námestie slobody with a helicopter . Bahýľ was best known for his patent (No. 3392) for a helicopter, which was filed on August 13, 1895. On May 5, 1905, a helicopter he had developed flew in Pressburg for 1.5 km at a height of 4 m. But it was probably an "unmanned model" weighing around 50 kg.

Trivia

After Ján Bahýľ was established in May 2000 by the Slovak astronomer Peter Kušnirák discovered asteroid (26640) Bahýľ named. The Slovak Patent and Trademark Office (IPO SR) awards the Jána Bahýľ Award for extraordinary inventions every two years .
