Ures (officially Heroica Ciudad de Ures ) is a small city in the Mexican state of Sonora . Ures is located in the Municipio Ures and is its administrative center.
General
Ures is located in the basin of the Río Sonora in the western Sierra Madre at 420 m above sea level. The surrounding vegetation consists of mesquite ( Prosopis velutina ) and other desert shrubs, including the Sonoran palmetto palm Sabal uresana , which is native here .
Ures is one of the oldest settlements in Sonora. It was founded by a Jesuit missionary and was named San Miguel until 1665. In 1838 it was promoted to town and was the capital of Sonora until 1879, then the seat of the district administration until it was abolished in 1917.
Ures suffered from Apache raids in 1870 and 1882 when chief Geronimo and his men withdrew from Arizona to the Sierra Madre in front of the US troops . Even with the resident Yaqui - Indians there were problems in the late 19th century. On September 5, 1998, Ures received the honorary title of "Hero City" for successfully defending the city against the French during the reign of Emperor Maximilian von Habsburg .
Ures offers some tourist attractions, such as La Plaza de Armas (La Plaza de Zaragoza) with four bronze sculptures from the 18th century, the Mission and the Church of San Miguel with the Mesquite staircase, as well as the Folklore Museum.
