Lord Sokol

Hersch Sokol (born October 25, 1908 in Białystok , † January 1943 in Fort Breendonk ) was a Polish doctor and radio operator of the Red Chapel .

Life

Sokol was a doctor. He had a Polish passport that had been issued in Berlin in September 1924. He was married to Miriam Sokol (Myra). Both were active in the Communist Party of Belgium .

From 1924 to 1931 Sokol visited Belgium, France, England and Switzerland. At times he carried out orders for a South American company. In 1938 he and his wife Miriam were expelled from Belgium . In 1939 he was interned as a communist in France. In 1940 he was recruited by Trepper . Leon Großvogel showed him how to work with the radio. Later, all of the Großvogel group's radio communications ran through him. In 1942 he kept in touch with Claude Spaak , with whom he left money and documents. From April to June 1942 he was the only radio operator who maintained the connection between Trepper and Moscow. On June 9, 1942, he was arrested near Paris. Despite the torture, Sokol did not betray anyone.

Doctor Hersch and his wife Doctor Miriam Sokol were tortured in Fort Breendonk . Wilhelm F. Flicke witnessed how the Gestapo set a dog on him.
