Herz des Himmels, Herz der Erde is a feature film documentary (2011) by Frauke Sandig and Eric Black.

action

The film follows six young Maya in Mexico and Guatemala in their everyday life, their ceremonies and their resistance to the destruction of their culture and environment. The Maya world view, in which nature and all being are sacred and connected with one another, is opposed to the short-sighted and thoughtless exploitation and destruction of the earth.

reception

After the German premiere at Dok-Leipzig, Herz des Himmels, Herz der Erde had its international premiere at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam, was shown at over a hundred international film festivals and won first prize at the Planet in Focus Festival in Toronto and the audience award awarded at the German Nature Film Prize. The film had a theatrical release in Germany and Japan and was the opening film of the Human Rights Film Festival in the National Theater of Guatemala in 2012.

criticism

Aesthetically and in terms of content, the film was largely positively discussed in Germany. Above all, the universal importance of the struggle of indigenous peoples for their rights is emphasized. Thomas Assheuer wrote in Die Zeit : “It is quite possible that big industry will succeed in giving nature the rest and planting genetically modified maize on its burned fields; It is quite possible that the indigenous population will be intimidated or driven away. On the other hand, resistance is growing, and many young Maya now read their calendar very differently. The world, they say, will not end, it will make a new beginning, but you have to fight for it, here and now. If you are looking for impressive proof of this tenacious restlessness - the heart of heaven, heart of the earth is one. "Peter von Becker agrees in the Tagesspiegel:" And not from the ancient gods of the Mayas, not from heaven, now the disaster threatens. A young Maya says: "Our earth, the climate, life is being destroyed by the people themselves." A silent, large, disturbing film. "During his time at the cinema, Peter Gutting particularly praised the imagery:" This describes this different relationship to nature better with pictures than with words. That is exactly what Heart of Heaven, Heart of Earth, does. For example with clouds that glow from within, rivers that let their power be felt, or mountains that give us inner peace. Eric Black, who is also responsible for the camera, creates settings that are inspired by the fascination of a previously unknown, just discovered world. "
