Herzog Ferrantes Ende is a German feature film from 1922 by and with Paul Wegener .

action

Italy , in the late Middle Ages. Duke Ferrante is a typical tyrant of his time and not very squeamish about his means of securing his endangered rule. Murder, torture and oppression are the everyday tools of this despot. He has the bodies of his victims embalmed and lined up in a catacomb. At this sight he thinks he is certain that his tyranny will never end. But gradually resistance stirs, at first timid, then more and more violent. The center of the rebellion is the secret "League of Dagger Brothers". The conspirators plan nothing less than the overthrow of the ducal monster, since he also has their former leader, Guido Colonna, who was hanged on his behalf, on his conscience.

The dagger brothers are led by the brave Antonio, who loves the sister of the murdered man, Beatrice Colonna. Her brother Orlando is also accepted into the circle of conspirators - more than that: he was determined by lot to kill the hated Duke. On the feast day in honor of St. Sebastian, the attack on Ferrante is supposed to succeed, but it goes wrong. Orlando is arrested, imprisoned and reportedly punished with torture. When father Colonna begs for mercy for his youngest, Duke Ferrante suggests him a horse trade. He would spare the life of Orlando if old Colonna handed him a document that Beatrice, whom he desired, was handing over to him.

Ferrante's lackey Trivulzio now brings Orlando into the catacombs, where Orlando has to look at the embalmed, battered body of his dead brother. Beside himself with anger, Orlando rushes at him, pursues Ferrante's confidante and finally throws him down from the battlements of the castle. Then Orlando frees his dead brother Guido and takes his position. When Ferrante visits the catacombs again to enjoy the sight of the dead Guido, Orlando jumps at him and thrusts his drawn dagger into his heart. Meanwhile, the rebels begin to storm the tyrant's castle. As a sign of triumph, Orlando holds the head of the Lord of Terror aloft. Then he throws his head on a heap of rubbish and the castle goes up in flames.
