Hesperaloe campanulata (English common name "Bell Flower Hesperaloe") is a species of the genus Hesperaloe in the agave family .
description
Hesperaloe campanulata is stemless and forms clumps of 60 to 120 cm in diameter. The upright, stiff, channel-shaped, linear, green leaves are 60 to 110 cm long. The fine, variable white marginal fibers are 5 to 10 cm long.
The branched, panicle-shaped inflorescence reaches a height of 3 m. It is rarely branched on the lower half. The flowers appear in the upper half. The tubular to broadly bell-shaped flowers are 20 to 25 mm long. The tepals are white inside and pink outside with wide white borders. The flowers open in the evening. The flowering period begins at the end of March and extends into October.
The fruits are woody, spherical to elongated capsules 20 to 30 mm in length and width. They contain black seeds 6 to 8 mm long and 5 to 6 mm wide .
Distribution and systematics
Hesperaloe campanulata is located in Mexico in the state of Nuevo León in a limited area in dense bushland on limestone hills of the Chihuahua Desert at an altitude of 100 to 600 m. The species grows together with yucca rostrata , agave species and various types of cacti.
The valid description by Gregory Dirk Starr under the name Hesperaloe campanulata was published in 1997.
Hesperaloe campanulata is frost hardy to minus 10 ° C in Central Europe. It is seldom represented in collections. It resembles Hesperaloe funifera in its youth stage, but can be easily distinguished by its flower color (white to light green).
