The Hestfjall (221 m) is a volcanic mountain in the west of Iceland in the district Borgarfjörður .

Surname

The name means horse mountain in German (isl. Fjall = dt. Mountain ). There are many mountains in Iceland, which this name or the name Hestur (isl. Hestur dt =. Horse ) lead.

location

The mountain is about 3 km northwest of Lake Skorradalsvatn .

Road no. 50 from Borgarnes to Reykholtsdalur leads around it to the west and north, and to the east is the unpaved road no. 520 from Lundarreykjadalur to Skorradalsvatn and south the connection road No. 408 from Skorradalsvatn to the small power plant Andakilsvirkju n.

description

The low, but prominent mountain was once part of the large central volcano, which was active 4 million years ago and mainly includes the current Skarðsheiði and Hafnarfjall massifs . This also explains the finds of semi-precious stones and crystals in its vicinity.

The mountain has an oval ground plan and stretches for about 4 km from southwest to northeast.

The west side of the mountain is adorned by a striking belt of rocks, which can also have two prominent former eruption channels. These are called Festar .

Settlement

The mountain lies between the farms of Fossamelar on its south side and Hestur on the north side. The latter belongs to the agricultural college in Hvanneyri and is used as a test farm for cattle breeding despite the misleading name in the case.

Hiking at Hestfjall

There are numerous ways to get up the mountain. For example, you can go to the summit from Fossamelar farm, but also from connecting road 520.
