history

The brewery was originally founded in 1471 by members of the Beguines and Begarden Christian community . In 1872 the Mechelen brewery was acquired by Louis Van Breedam , who renamed it and gave it its current name, Het Anker . In 1904, Het Anker expanded its range to include lagers and ales . After the Second World War , a so-called Keizer (Kaiser beer) was produced. Het Anker also opened a brasserie and ran a hotel.

The company has been producing, among other things, the brands Gouden Carolus (Goldener Karl), named after the Roman-German Emperor Karl V , Maneblusser and other types of beer since 1960 . An ale is brewed under the Lucifer brand , along with the Dentergems Wit wheat beer , for which the rights to the varieties were acquired from Duvel Moortgat , the owner of the bankrupt Belgian brewery Liefmans , where the beer was originally made. A fruit beer is also offered with Boscoli . In 2010 a single malt whiskey began to be produced, which is marketed under the name Gouden Carolus Single Malt.

The beer brand Lucifer took sixth place in a test by the New York Times in 2010 . In 2015, Goulden Carlos Classic was named the best Belgian beer in the Belgian Style Strong category. The company is family-run in the fifth generation and is a member of the Belgian Family Brewers .
