description

Vegetative characteristics

Heteranthia decipiens is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows upright or prostrate with ascending branches and reaches a height of 0.3 to 0.4 m. It is covered with glandular trichomes that have a warty surface, curved, multicellular (three to seven cells) and single-row stems, and two- or multicellular heads. The endodermis shows Casparian stripes , the inner phloem is not fibrous. There are no stone cells in the marrow , calcium oxalate is found in the form of drusen (star-like crystals) in the cortex , in the marrow and in the mesophyll .

The stalked leaves have ovate or inverted ovate leaf blades with a length of (1.8) 3 to 5 (6.5) cm in length. They run down on the petioles, which are only 2 to 8 mm long.

Inflorescences and flowers

The racemose inflorescences are (3.5) 5 to 8 (11) cm long and face the leaves. The flower stalks are about as long as the 3.5 to 4 mm long, radially symmetrical calyx . The five triangular corolla lobes are about half as long as the corolla tube. The purple, red or white, zygomorphic crown is 4.5 to 5 mm long and slightly bilobed. The corolla tube is narrow and short at 1.2 mm, then widens into a broad, funnel-shaped border of almost 4 mm in diameter. The corolla lobes are quite short and wide.

The four stamens come in two different forms, they are set on two different levels in the upper half of the corolla tube, at the point of attachment the stamens are hairy. The shorter stamens are about 1.1 mm long and sit a little deeper than the two longer, about 1.5 mm long stamens. The anthers are fixed to the stamen ventrally (on the abdomen), about 1.1 to 1.2 mm long, the two theca are of different sizes and are separated from each other in the lower third as well as at the top.

The ovary is almost conical or pear-shaped, nectaries are apparently absent or only cryptic. The tip of the stylus is raised, curved or almost hook-shaped. The small scar is disc-shaped and head-shaped.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are almost spherical, somewhat elongated and pointed capsules with a length of 3 to 35 mm. They contain 20 to 28 seeds and are enclosed in a slightly longer calyx. The capsules open with a gap in the septum, the two chambers are smooth and have entire margins. The seeds are cubic in shape, 0.5 to 0.6 mm long and the surface is reticulate. The embryo lies straight in the seed and is very small at 0.25 to 0.35, the cotyledons are unequal in length and shorter than the rest of the embryo.

Occurrence

The only species of the genus Heteranthia is endemic to Bahia , a state in eastern Brazil .
