Heterometrus rolciki is an Indian scorpion in the Scorpionidae family .

description

Adult specimens of Hetermetrus rolciki are 80 to 100 millimeters long and have a reddish-brown to black basic color, the telson can be lighter. The combs of the comb organ are yellow, they have 10 to 12 teeth in both sexes. The proportions of the pedipalps do not reveal any sexual dimorphism . Their chelae are slightly lobed and covered with long setae. The dorsal surfaces of the chelae are smooth, with no granules or keels. The carapace and mesosoma are covered with granules on the whole surface. The metasoma is hairy and covered with granules on the entire dorsal surface. The telson is hairy and elongated, the poisonous bladder and poison sting are equally long. The legs have short and long setae standing alone.

Heterometrus rolciki is similar to the species Heterometrus scaber , which is widespread in India and is also found in Tamil Nadu. However, Heterometrus rolciki is much smaller and has some morphological differences.

distribution

The terra typica of Heterometrus rolciki is located in the Nilgiri Mountains near the village of Kunjappanai, about 15 kilometers southeast of the small town of Kotagiri in the Nilgiris district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu ( 11 ° 22 ′ 0 ″  N , 76 ° 56 ′ 0 ″  E ). It is about 900 meters above sea level.

Systematics

Initial description

The first description was made by František Kovařík as part of his 2004 revision of the genus Heterometrus . The basis of the first description were specimens collected between 1997 and 2001 at the type site and in its vicinity. Among them was the male holotype, which Kovařík kept in the terrarium from 2000 to 2004.

Type material

The holotype is a 100 millimeter long adult male. There is also an adult allotype as well as a male adult scorpion, a subadult animal and two young animals as paratypes . The type material is in the collection of František Kovařík in Prague.

etymology

The species name honors Jakub Rolčík , a private lecturer at the Palacký University in Olomouc and at the Institute for Experimental Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic . Rolčík, who has a private entomological collection, collected the holotype and handed it over to František Kovařík.
