history

The slim, round tower was built in 1483 under the Württemberg Count Eberhard im Bart . It served as the western end point of the Württemberg Landgraben , a border wall that formed the northern border of Württemberg at the time and cordoned off the Neckar valley between Heuchelberg and Löwenstein mountains . The view that the tower offered over large areas of the lowlands was used to monitor the border; the tower had no further military function. When Württemberg expanded northward in 1805, the moat lost its importance and was leveled.

In 1897/98 the community of Großgartach, on whose boundary the tower was located, renovated it in cooperation with the Heilbronn local group of the Swabian Alb Association . It was converted into an observation tower and at the same time raised a little. In 1952 another renovation took place. In the following year, the Löwenwirt Wilhelm König started to use the Heuchelberg as a restaurant with the construction of a barbecue area in the immediate vicinity of the tower. Soon the first hut was added, in 1956 a restaurant and later a kiosk. The tenant Alfred Schlagenhau , who has been active on the Heuchelberg since 1973, then had the Heuchelberger Warte restaurant built, which has been expanded several times since 1992 under the current tenants of Wieland. The Wielands also had plans for a summer toboggan run with a chair lift , but these failed in the Leingarten municipal council. The Heuchelberger Warte was named Monument of the Month for June 2004 by the Monument Foundation Baden-Württemberg .

The Heuchelberger Warte now belongs to the town of Leingarten , in which Großgartach rose in 1970 and whose municipal flag flies on the top of the tower. Immediately next to the tower is a restaurant with a beer garden and all kinds of leisure activities. Especially on weekends with nice weather, the Heuchelberger Warte is a popular destination in the Heilbronn area. Two long-distance hiking trails of the Swabian Alb Association touch the waiting area, the Frankenweg (HW 8) and the Württemberg Wine Trail (WWW) .
