The Württemberg Wine Trail (WWW) is a themed and long-distance hiking trail run by the Swabian Alb Association from Aub in Bavarian Franconia to the former imperial city of Esslingen am Neckar . Over a length of approx. 470 km, it leads through the wine landscape of northern Württemberg. It is considered the longest German wine trail.

history

From 1972 the Swabian Alb Association began to rededicate the route of the Bottwartalbahn on the route from Heilbronn to Beilstein to a hiking and cycling route. At the same time, stimulated by the red wine hiking trail along the Ahr , which was strongly advertised at the time, the desire to create a corresponding wine hiking trail through the region arose in the Württemberg lowlands .

Gotthilf Link , the then president of the Württemberg winegrowing association , was an advocate of this idea. Together with the Albverein presidents Georg Fahrbach and Helmut Schönnamsgruber , these plans were put into concrete terms.

From 1984 the construction and marking of the path by the Swabian Alb Association and the then Neckarland-Swabian tourism association began. It was explicitly decided not to build a new main hiking trail , and although the Weinwanderweg with red, stylized grapes was given its own signpost, at the beginning it was preferred to use existing hiking trails instead of a marker. The Württemberg Wine Walk was officially opened on May 12, 1988. In the early years, the Neckarland-Schwaben tourism association took over the marketing of the new wine hiking trail.

For the 25th anniversary of the hiking trail, the Swabian Alb Association is planning to increase marketing. In cooperation with Tourismus-Marketing Baden-Württemberg , the Württemberg wine hiking trail, the Württemberg wine route and a new wine bike hiking trail are to form a tourist unit in the future .

Route of the wine hiking trail

The Württemberg Wine Trail leads through 56 wine-growing communities. Due to its route over vineyards, it has a high proportion of paved paths. It can be done all year round, but autumn is a popular season for the Württemberg Wine Trail.

The route leads from Aub in the Bavarian Franconia through the Taubertal into Hohenlohe . It moves through the Württemberg lowlands with its growing areas around Weinsberg and Heilbronn . From there he makes a loop into Zabergäu and the Stromberg-Heuchelberg nature park , which is considered optional for the hiking trail. At the Wunnenstein the main route is reached again, which leads via Steinheim an der Murr and Marbach am Neckar into the lower Remstal . Finally, via the state capital Stuttgart , the route goes over vineyards to the former free imperial city of Esslingen.

"The wine hiking trail begins and ends, as befits a Württemberg resident, abroad"

- Eberhard Uhl
