Chajim Heymann Steinthal , also Heinemann, Hermann or Heinrich (born May 16, 1823 in Gröbzig , Anhalt , † March 14, 1899 in Berlin ), was a German linguist and philosopher .

Life

Heymann Steinthal

Heymann Steinthal graduated from high school in Bernburg (Saale) and studied linguistics and mythology at the University of Berlin , where he was appointed private lecturer in philology and mythology in 1850 . During his studies he was particularly concerned with the theories of Wilhelm von Humboldt , whose linguistic works he later published in 1884. From 1852 to 1855 Steinthal moved to Paris , where he devoted himself to his studies of the Chinese language .

In 1863 he received an extraordinary professorship in Berlin. In 1869 he was one of the founding members of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory . From 1872 Steinthal also worked as a lecturer for the philosophy of religion and the critical history of the Old Testament at the College for the Science of Judaism . Together with his friend and brother Moritz Lazarus he published as early as 1860, the Journal of social psychology and linguistics , so the two laid the foundation for the new, former title Science loaded. Furthermore, Steinthal was one of the directors of the German-Israelite Community Association from 1883 and as such was responsible for the religious teaching department in various small communities.
