Hibernal is a white wine variety that was bred by Heinrich Birk at the Institute for Vine Breeding of the Geisenheim Research Institute, today Geisenheim University . To do this , the grape breeder crossed a strain from the grape varieties (Seibel 7053 x Riesling clone 239) with himself in 1944. The Seibel 7053 variety is also known as Chancellor , especially in the USA . In 1958 Heinrich Birk recognized the positive properties of the seedling and gave it the name Gm 322 58. Hibernal has had plant variety protection since 1977 and in 1999 it was included in the list of varieties of the Federal Plant Variety Office .
The experiments with this grape variety belong in the same context as the development of other new varieties such as Rondo or Saphira . The basic idea was to develop vines with resistance to the genuine - and downy mildew , to the use of chemical pesticides to reduce. The variety has the resistance genes Ren3 and Ren9. In bad years this vine is susceptible to powdery mildew (powdery mildew and downy mildew of the grapevine) and must be provided with 1–2 treatments, each shortly before and / or shortly after flowering. However, the very good winter frost resistance of the variety is advantageous, even against temperatures well below −20 ° C. Therefore, the variety plays mainly in Eastern European countries, such as B. in the Czech Republic a bigger role than in Germany. The full-bodied and classy wine type is reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc and Scheurebe in taste , because Hibernal, just like these varieties, contains flavors from the group of thiols .
