Jerôme or Hieronymus Sillem (born July 27, 1768 in Hamburg , † April 19, 1833 in Amsterdam ) was a Hamburg merchant who founded the Dutch patrician family Sillem.

His parents were Garlieb Helwig Sillem (born August 29, 1728 in Hamburg, † July 10, 1801 in Wellingsbüttel ) and Louise-Marie, b. Matthiessen (born March 23, 1749 in Hamburg; † January 13, 1826; ⚭ 1765 in Hamburg), a daughter of Hieronymus Matthiessen . The Hamburg councilor Joachim Sillem (1691–1737) was his grandfather. His brother Johann Sillem (1777-1845) became director of the Hamburg city post in 1822.

When his father fell ill and his uncle JC Matthiessen traveled a lot , he took over the management of his father's business at the age of 19 and made connections with Hope & Co. in Amsterdam. After Jean-Charles Pichegru's invasion of Holland, they had sold their stocks of goods from the colonies to Hamburg.

In May 1795 he married Wilhelmine Büsch (born August 27, 1772 in Hamburg, † November 21, 1852 in Amsterdam), the daughter of Johann Georg Büsch . Among her children was Nadeshda Amalie (March 6, 1813 in St. Petersburg; † August 18, 1899; ⚭ 1st: 1834 Auguste Alfred Odier (1802–1870), son of Antoine Odier , ⚭ 2nd 1873 the Parisian painter Achille Benouville ), Wilhelmine (1798–1873) and Wilhelm (1804–1885).

In 1803 he met Henrich Steffens in Hamburg .

After the incorporation of Hamburg into the French Empire and the continental blockade, he moved with his family to Saint Petersburg in 1812 , where he represented Hope.

After the end of the French wars, he was offered entry into the House of Hope by the London Barings, the main shareholders of Hope. In 1815 he moved with his family to Amsterdam and soon took over the management of Hopes. Christian Daniel Benecke headed his Hamburg house during this time .

Together with Barings in London and Hottinguer (see also Hottinger & Compagnie ) in Paris, he participated in government bonds.

He performed his representative duties at his country estate Sparenhove near Haarlem.

According to Alexander Baring , the later and first Lord Ashburton, he is said to have combined caution in execution with bold design.
