High Knoll Fort (formerly also High Knoll Citadel ) is a fortification on the Atlantic island of St. Helena , an equal part of the British overseas territory of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha . The current fort was built in 1874 by the East India Company as a redoubt in today 's St. Paul’s district .
history
The first fort at the current location of the High Knoll Fort was built around 1790 or 1799 by order of Governor Robert Brooke . It is said to have been a fortress similar to a Martello tower .
High Knoll Fort was used to defend the main Jamestown settlement , in particular to access Ladder Hill at the top of what is now Jacob's Ladder .
After extensive renovation and renovation work, the fort was reopened to residents and tourists on April 25, 2015 by the St. Helena National Trust . It is one of the Seven Wonders of St. Helena . High Knoll Fort enjoys the highest level of protection as a Grade I monument protection structure and is a recognized historical reserve .
