High Lane - Don't Look Down! is a 2009 French horror film directed by Abel Ferry . The film shows a group of young mountaineers who are attacked on their adventure and have to fight for their lives.

action

Five young adventurers travel in a good mood to the Croatian national park Risnjak to climb in the mountains. Fred and his girlfriend Karine are accompanied by Chloé, her boyfriend Loïc and Guillaume. When they arrive at the mountain, they find that the via ferrata is closed. Fred nevertheless goes bravely and convinces the others to follow him. Shortly after the beginning of the path you have to cross a wobbly suspension bridge. Karine is the last to go and almost falls when the bridge collapses below her.

On a steep rock face, Fred climbs ahead with Karine to support the others with the rope from above. In the forest, however, Fred steps into a bear trap that seriously injures his leg. Meanwhile, the nervous Loïc slips and pulls Guillaume with him. Karine doesn't manage to free Fred and returns to the rock face, where she saves the two fallen people with an additional rope. When the four adventurers come back into the forest, Fred has disappeared. Only the trap and blood stains can be seen.

In the pouring rain and increasing darkness, the remaining friends move on to look for Fred. Loïc gets into an argument with Guillaume, who shows a clear interest in Chloé. When she wants to settle the dispute, she falls into a hole. Karine climbs down and sees that Chloé's arm has been pierced by a metal spike. Guillaume feels watched up in the forest. After Karine has saved Chloé, the four protagonists rope up against each other and move on; Karine is at the end of the chain. Suddenly she is shot from behind with an arrow and before someone pulls her away, she finds out in her death that the rope has been cut.

Chloé, Loïc and Guillaume go on and find a wooden hut. Inside, Fred is lying naked on a table and is dying right in front of her eyes. Guillaume searches the hut and finds Fred's backpack with the torches as well as numerous hunting trophies and tools of a poacher in the cellar . He reads the name Anton on one wall. When he tries to climb back upstairs, Loïc knocks him out and closes the trapdoor. Then the poacher Anton appears, who has caught Karine as well as Fred. Loïc and Chloé first fight with Anton, but then Loïc runs away with a torch.

While Anton turns to the bodies of Fred and Karine, Chloé and Guillaume are tied up in the cellar. When they try to loosen the bonds, Anton comes and takes Chloé upstairs. In his desperation, Guillaume can finally free himself, but cannot open the trap door. At the last moment, Loïc, whose torch has gone out, comes back to the hut. He distracts Anton, who is now chasing him. Chloé and Guillaume take the chance to escape.

Anton shoots an arrow in Loïc's leg, but Loïc escapes after a fight. He climbs down the false rock face and gets stuck on an unstable ladder. After his cry for help, Chloé and Guillaume appear on the cliff. Guillaume tries to pull Loïc up, but then lets him fall into the abyss. He is comforting Chloé when Anton shoots an arrow in his head. Now Chloé is fighting with Anton. She gives his name, which confuses the poacher and gives her the chance to slit the murderer's throat. But Chloé waives the final fatal blow because she remembers how she lost a patient in her job as a nurse. She approaches freedom via a zip line when suddenly a loud bang can be heard.

At the end, a voice explains that only Loïc's body was found. Anton, who was kidnapped when he was five, also remains missing. Allegedly, numerous people disappear in the Balkans every year .

production

The film was produced on 35 days of shooting, although the recordings actually took place in the mountains because of the authenticity. Since the action takes place in the summer, but the film was made in October, the shooting became a great burden for the scantily clad actors.

Reviews

Many reviewers point out that the mountaineering adventure will turn into a horror and splatter film as the story progresses . The critic writes on cinema.de: “With its extremely strong, dizzying images, the French feature film debut is in a class of its own. But be careful: the mountain thriller turns into a badly nasty horror trip with extremely nasty splatter effects in certain scenes. ”The reviewer from kino.de sees an“ exciting survival thriller, which is effectively staged in front of pretty landscapes and by likeable young actors well played ”. Michael Drewniok criticizes the development of the film at filmbessprechungen.de: “Unstable group dynamics and dangerous surroundings: Ferry should have been content with these two aspects. But he wanted to be on the safe side. In the second half of the film, “High Lane” takes a “wrong turn” in the direction of gross horror. ”He also recognizes a lack of logic:“ The script also encourages the characters to behave questionably in critical moments. ”
