High Society in Korean (international title: High Society ) is a 2018 feature film by the South Korean director Byun Hyuk .

action

Jang Tae-jun is an economics professor at a university. Oh Su-yeon is the vice director of an art gallery. They are a well-off, middle-class couple. But both beckons a rise in the high society of Seoul. Jang is invited to television as a professor to comment on economic policy issues. To solve the problem of the depressing rental prices, he suggests a civil bank. A few days after his performance, he saves a man who set himself on fire. The Conservative Republican Party sees him as a candidate for Congress because of the advocacy of his rescue act and views on the Internet. You want to tackle the civil banking issue with him. Meanwhile, Su-yeon's relationship with her boss is strained. But she is energetic in her work and wants to become the director of the art gallery. Since the director of the gallery, Hwa-lan, questions her suitability as director, she seeks out her husband, the artist Han Yong-seok, in order to obtain assurance from him for the future management.

reception

The film opened in South Korean cinemas on August 29, 2018 and recorded 768,442 admissions. Internationally, Netflix released the long version of the film on January 29, 2019.

Yoon Min-sik of the Korea Herald gives the film mixed reviews. The film is visually appealing, the acting is good and the idea is convincing. Yoon Je-moon plays very accentuated and ensures the few laughs, even if it is always clear that his character is the most unpleasant in the film. However, the characters are ultimately not developed enough, the ending is weak and the film does not offer a new perspective.
