The Highlanders Football Club is a Zimbabwean football club from Bulawayo that plays in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (first Zimbabwean league).
history
At the beginning of the 20th century, Lobengula , King of the Ndebele , sent his two grandsons Albert and Rhodes to South Africa to study there. Both played soccer while studying and Rhodes founded Lions Football Club on his return in 1926 . Most of the players came from Makokoba, the oldest part of Bulawayo. Ten years later the club was renamed the Matebeleland Highlanders Football Club . In 1966, the club received a request from the Rhodesia National Football League to participate in their league operations. The Highlanders agreed and started in the second division two years later. In the very first season, the club was first and thus rose to the first division. In 1970, the club made it to the Premier Soccer League for the first time, but rose again after only one season and again after another season. Due to differences with the league management, the Highlanders left the Premier Soccer League and founded the South Zone Soccer League. Annoyed by this fact, many members left their club and founded a new club called Olympics , which was also to appear under a black and white striped emblem. Despite the decline in membership, the Highlanders continued to exist and were a founding member of the new league, as were the clubs Black Chiefs, Callies, Portuguese, Old Miltonians, Black Horrors, Ramblers and Go Beer Rovers.
In 1979, the clubs from the capital Salisbury (now Harare) also recognized the point of this action and expressed their support in the fight against injustice in Zimbabwean football. The result was the National Professional Soccer League, which merged with the Rhodesia National Football League to form the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA). In 1990 the Highlanders won their first national championship in the new first division. More followed in 1993, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2006.
