Hilding Gunnar Oskar Linnqvist (born September 2, 1891 in Stockholm , † 1984 ) was a Swedish painter .

Linnqvist studied 1910-1912 at the Art Academy in Stockholm. Together with Axel Nilsson and Fritiof Schüldt , he opposed both academic standards and the Matisse School. From 1915 he painted in a naive style and until 1920 he created characteristic small-format paintings with lyrical, dreamy motifs in rich colors. In 1921–23 he traveled to England , France ( Chinon ) and Italy , painting in a lighter, more relevant style. Two sources of inspiration were the Swedish painter Pehr Hörberg and the writer Carl Jonas Love Almqvist .

After 1925 he created several publicly accessible wall paintings in Sweden and he traveled several times to the Mediterranean. 1939-41 he was a professor at the Art Academy in Stockholm.
