Hillel , named after the Jewish scribes Hillel , claims to be the world's largest Jewish - university student organization . It was founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois with the aim of enriching the Jewish life of its members in order to create the basis for any "re-enrichment" of Judaism worldwide by those sponsored.

Hillel is primarily active in North America , Eastern Europe and Israel . In Germany, the first Hillel Hub was opened in Heidelberg in 2012 . Since 2014, Hillel International has been officially cooperating with the Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk to set up Hillel Hubs as locations for Jewish student life in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In addition to Berlin , Hamburg , Frankfurt and Munich , these hubs also exist in smaller cities such as Münster and Heidelberg. Religious, cultural and social events for Jewish students and university members are organized in the hubs .
