Hiltrud Breyer (born August 22, 1957 in Saarbrücken ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ).

Life and work

Hiltrud Breyer grew up in the Saar-Lor-Lux border region , where she was active in the resistance against the Cattenom nuclear power plant in Lorraine . Breyer first worked in a kindergarten and then made up for the Abitur on the second educational path . She then completed a degree in political science at the University of Saarland in Saarbrücken and the Free University of Berlin , she as a diploma ended -Politologin. She then worked in research institutions.

Hiltrud Breyer was married and has two children from this marriage.

Political party

She is a founding member of the party Die Grünen and since 1979 in the Saarland regional association. Later she was spokeswoman for the state board of the Greens in Saarland . Hiltrud Breyer was meanwhile a member of the Federal Women's Council and the State Council of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen.

From 1989 to 2009 she was a member of the European Parliament , where she belonged to the group The Greens / European Free Alliance . She was a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety , the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and the Delegation for relations with Japan . In addition, she founded the EP intergroup Bioethics , which she chaired. In addition, she was Vice-President of the EP Intergroup Health and Consumer Protection and active member of the Intergroup "Animal Welfare" ( animal welfare ). In 2003 she published the EU Environment Manual: Do n't be afraid of Brussels .

In 2009 Breyer obtained a ban on PBT substances in the European Union. These substances are chemicals that are particularly dangerous for the environment, are persistent, bioaccumulating and toxic and are partly responsible for the Colony Collapse Disorder (bee death). This was the first time that bees were protected. In addition, as rapporteur for Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009 (Plant Protection Products Regulation), she has enforced that the Commission must for the first time define criteria for hormone-like substances ( endocrine disruptors ). It has significantly influenced EU legislation on genetic engineering , in particular the coexistence requirement as well as regulations on liability and labeling.

On October 31, 2013, she moved into the European Parliament again as a replacement for Franziska Brantner . She was not run as a candidate for the 2014 European elections . On her departure from the EU Parliament, Breyer published the book Toxic Free Europe , in which numerous environmental associations participated.

Since then, Breyer has been involved in the scientific advisory board of the Coordination against BAYER Risks (CBG).

Breyer is the official supporter of the surveillance-critical data protection demonstration Freedom Instead of Fear .
