The Himmelsbrücke is a brick arch bridge over the Sohlander Dorfbach in Sohland on the Spree in the Bautzen district . It is considered the landmark of the municipality of Sohland. Until 1947 it led across the Spree .
description
The single-arched bridge made of granite stones, known as the sky bridge because of its steep ascending shape , leads over the Sohlander Dorfbach at the western foot of the spring mountain. One keystone bears the inscription " SoliDe o Gloria ", which is incorrectly separated for reasons of space , the other the year 1796.
The narrow bridge, which used to be used by carts, is now only permitted for pedestrians. It is protected as a cultural monument. The Oberlausitzer Bergweg and the Spreeradweg run past the Himmelsbrücke .
The dialect poet Hermann Klippel dedicated the poem De Himmelsbrücke to the bridge .
history
The bridge was built in 1796 at the White Mill on the Kirchsteig from Wendischsohland to Mittelohland as a crossing over the Spree and replaced a wooden bridge that has been documented since 1709.
In 1876 the bridge was chosen as the motif for the seal and the municipal coat of arms of the newly formed municipality of Sohland. Since the regulation of the Spree in 1947, the sky bridge has been crossing the Sohlander Dorfbach.
