The Thaon-di-Revel-class is a class of frigate -sized patrol vessels of the Italian Navy . At least seven of the approximately 6,000 tons of displacement ships are expected to be put into service in Italy from 2021. The type ship and thus the class is named after Grand Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel , it was designed under the working name Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura (PPA) (German: "Multi-purpose ocean patrol ship").

While ten frigates of the FREMM type are primarily intended for use in carrier combat groups , the PPA should operate individually as patrol ships. The main tasks are the surveillance of larger sea areas, the protection of civil shipping - in particular against asymmetrical threats ( piracy ) - the implementation of embargo measures, evacuation operations and operations against people smuggling as well as the support of rescue organizations in the event of disasters and sea rescue .
The PPA are built in three versions: a fully equipped and heavily armed version called full and the two lighter versions light plus and light . The modular structure of the ships allows quick and flexible adaptation to the respective operational scenario. Seven PPAs are firmly ordered and there are options for three more; the construction of further ships was considered. The PPA are to replace four light frigates of the Artigliere class , eight corvettes of the Minerva class and some of the smaller patrol ships of the Cassiopea, Sirio and Comandanti classes in the Italian Navy . In the future, the tasks of these smaller units will largely be taken over by the Coast Guard , whose units are built according to civilian standards and are less expensive to maintain.

The ships are built by the Fincantieri shipyards in Riva Trigoso and Muggiano near La Spezia . In the following table, the term keel laying usually means the first steel cut, with the launch of the rollout .

In the event that the Italian Navy were to forego corvettes and patrol ships the size of corvettes altogether, six more PPAs were planned. This meant that 16 PPA should replace a total of 22 light frigates (Artigliere) , corvettes (Minerva) and patrol ships. There are currently Franco-Italian plans for a so-called European Patrol Corvette (EPC).
