Hinrich Borkenstein

Hinrich Borkenstein (born October 21, 1705 in Hamburg ; † November 29, 1777 there ) was a Hamburg comedy poet.

Life

Hinrich Borkenstein was born on October 21, 1705 in Hamburg. His parents were Julius Borkenstein (* around 1644 in Clausthal, † 1714 in Hamburg) and Anna von Rönne (* 1675 in Hamburg, † 1719 there).

Hinrich Borkenstein was an accountant. During this time (around 1741) he also wrote his plays. He emigrated to Spain and came back with fortune in 1764. In 1766 he became Danish Commerce Councilor.

Hinrich Borkenstein married Susanna Brugier from a Huguenot family in 1768. His oldest daughter was born in Hamburg with the name Susanna. She is the future Susette Gontard (1769–1802), a merchant's wife in Frankfurt and Friedrich Hölderlin's Diotima . She was followed by the sisters Dorothea Amalia (* 1770; married the wine merchant Carl Ludwig Thierry in 1791 ) and Louise Catharina (* 1771 or 1772) and her brother Heinrich (Henry, * 1773). The family had a town house on Jungfernstieg and a summer house in Ottensen , which the widowed Susanna Borkenstein could probably keep.

Hinrich Borkenstein was buried in the crypt of the main church Sankt Michaelis .

Hinrich Borkenstein gained some local literary fame with his play De Bookesasche (the book bag in which the Hamburg women carried bible and / or hymn book when going to church), a satire on Hamburg's vices such as greed and rough sensuality. The piece was premiered on August 16, 1741 in Hamburg.
