The Hip Young Things were an independent band from Bielefeld that also gained international fame.

Band history

The Hip Young Things first met in 1988. The premise was that each of the musicians involved should take over an instrument that they had not yet played. The band reformed in 1990 after the original singer Brit Bordeaux left the band. Now founding member and guitarist Dirk Dresselhaus (born August 28, 1970 in Sennestadt , pseudonym Schneider ), who is now known under the name Schneider TM especially in the electronica scene, also took over the vocal parts. In the same year they supported the Walkabouts on their European tour and subsequently received a recording contract with the Glitterhouse label. The 1992 debut album Deflowered was successfully distributed across Europe and received good reviews. In 1993 the CD Root'n'Varies followed , which, in contrast to the debut album, was only recorded with acoustic instruments. With Shrug in 1994, however, the rough sound experiments of the debut album were taken up again.

The band continued to perform live regularly, including with Pond, the Ramones , Tuesday Weld , Beck , The Cramps and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion , and released their last album Ventilator in 1996 , which tended more towards pop music than the previous albums .

The Hip Young Things broke up in 1997 due to "musical and personal differences". Some of the band members remained active in the music scene. Dresselhaus initially focused briefly on his side project Locust Fudge , which he had been running with Christopher "Krite" Uhe since 1992 and which already had stronger references to electronic music and then became Schneider TM . Edgar Winterhoff and Olaf Arndt continued to work together in the band Slip . In 2000 Arndt went to Berlin and worked as O. Love live and on recordings by Julia Hummer and the Berlin band Mondo Fumatore , in which Christopher Uhe and J Mascis were also involved. He also worked as a live musician for Jens Friebe and the Kings Of Convenience .
