Hipping

The Hipping is a 23 hectare single location on the red slope of the municipality of Nierstein on the Rhine-Hessian Rheinterrasse ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). Wines from this location can be marketed as "Großes Gewächs" or "Erste Lage", provided other quality criteria are met.

Location, climate, soil

The Hipping vineyard extends along the Rhine north of Nierstein and south of Nackenheim . It is part of the large Rehbach site in the Rheinhessen wine-growing region and surrounds the “Brudersberg” monopoly in a southerly direction, completely encompasses the “Goldene Luft” enclave and even borders the “Ölberg” site in the south. The location is 90 to 160  m above sea level. NHN . In the sloping location with up to 70% slope and exposure to the southeast, the incoming morning sun is particularly beneficial for Riesling . The ground is red lying .

Due to its proximity to the center of Nierstein, Hipping is a much-used area for wine festivals, in particular for the event "Wine presentation on the Rote Hang" and vineyard tours for local winemakers.

Etymology of the name

The name of the location could be derived from the Middle High German "Hübel" for "hill" or from " Hippe (tool) ". The interpretations are complex and ambiguous.

history

The coronation of Elisabeth II on June 2, 1953 was celebrated with a Riesling from Franz Karl Schmitt from this vineyard. A 2012 Hipping Riesling from the Klaus Peter Keller winery, which had acquired the parcel in Hipping in 2010, therefore became the official wine for the 60th anniversary of the throne , which the Queen celebrated in 2012.
