The deer head near Ilmenau in the Thuringian Ilm district is 771.8  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Thuringian Forest .

It lies between the places Manebach in the northeast, Stützerbach in the south-southeast and Gehlberg in the west-northwest west of the Ilm valley at the height of Moosbach . The Moosbach in the north and the Hirschbach in the south flow around it almost completely, so that it stands relatively free and thus appears very dominant. Salzmannstraße , an old trade route, runs west of the Hirschkopf . The summit of the Hirschkopf cannot be reached via hiking trails. It is completely forested, the predominant tree species is the spruce .
