history

The "Historical Library of Swiss Pharmacy" foundation was founded in Bern in November 2008 under the patronage of the Swiss Pharmacists' Association, pharmaSuisse and the Swiss Society for the History of Pharmacy. Its aim is to acquire, preserve and bring to life books, prints, photographs and archive material of historical interest for Swiss pharmacy . The task was to rescue a large pool of old books, magazines and various documents that were stored in a cellar at pharmaSuisse in Bern. A contract was signed with the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University of Bern, where the main library is located today.

Stocks

The collection includes more than 6000 units. It consists of works from all pharmaceutical sciences with a focus on botanical works and those that describe the medicinal treasure. These often illustrated volumes correspond to the interests of the Bernese professor Alexander Tschirch , who contributed a lot to the development of the library before and after 1900. The older books, the "Rara", which appeared before 1800, constitute a treasure trove of several hundred books and contain some pieces of jewelery that were mostly collected by Tschirch.

The holdings have been fully cataloged and can be found on the website of the University Library of Bern .
