The historic city theater Weißenhorn ( district Neu-Ulm ) is the smallest playable public theater in Bavaria with 142 seats.

history

The building served as a zehentstadel, fire brigade props store, workshop of the glider pilot association, location for the community hearse and as a movie theater.

When the 16th-century Zehntstadel, located on the city's western moat, had become inoperative in 1840, the Weißenhorn theater company submitted a petition to the city's magistrate to let them convert the dilapidated building into a theater. But the request was given a negative response by the responsible city fathers, because "after the experiences made everywhere, amateur theater in no way contributes to the improvement of morality and education". It was not until 1876 that a theater room could be built in the Zehntstadel. This was actively used by guest theater groups and especially the Kolping sons.

From 1919 to 1952 the building was used as a cinema (Rothal-Lichtspiele). The delightful theater hall fell into disrepair. In the mid-1960s, stimulated by groups from Ulm and events organized by the Weißenhorner Heimat- und Museumverein, interest in the theater hall as a stylish setting for various events such as poetry readings, theater performances, opera soirees, concerts, exhibitions, etc. . V., who from then on used the theater for his events. In the summer of 1977 the Weißenhorn City Theater was opened to the public after a thorough renovation and retention of the classical decoration.
