Hitachi Magic Wand
The Hitachi Magic Wand (later renamed Magic Wand Original and Original Magic Wand , also called Magic Wand for short ) is an electrically operated, stick-shaped massager with a vibrating head section. The device was originally developed to treat muscle tension and later became famous for its use as a vibrator for clitoral stimulation .
The Magic Wand is 30 cm long and weighs 540 grams, the diameter of the rubberized massage head is 64 millimeters. The device originally required a cable for power supply, but a battery-powered version is now also available.
history
The Japanese company Hitachi first applied for a patent for the device in the United States in 1968. According to the manufacturer, the original area of application was to relieve back pain. Soon afterwards, however, sex therapist Betty Dodson discovered the possibility of using the Magic Wand as a masturbation aid for women. In her role as a therapist, she taught women with sexual dysfunction how to use the vibration of the Magic Wand for clitoral stimulation. With the so-called Betty-Dodson method, a towel is placed on the undressed pubic area and the Magic Wand with its vibrating head part is gently pressed at the level of the clitoris. This is maintained until the woman reaches orgasm . In its function as an aid to masturbation, the massage stick gained increasing popularity in the coming decades. The device was advertised by the manufacturer Hitachi until 1999 exclusively as a massage device for health care.
After being featured in a Sex-and-the-City episode in 2002, the product became known to a wider audience as a sex toy and was sold out in the US shortly thereafter. In 2013 Hitachi decided to discontinue production due to concerns that the company could be linked to the production of sex toys. The American distributor Vibratex convinced Hitachi to continue producing the device. It was subsequently sold under the name "Original Magic Wand". In 2014 there was another name change to "Magic Wand Original".
Use in sex therapy
The usefulness of the device in the treatment of arousal disorders and other sexual dysfunctions has been proven in various scientific studies . For example, in a study carried out in 1979 on the treatment of arousal disorders in women, McMullen and Rosen found that masturbation with the help of the Magic Wand was the best of the investigated methods for achieving orgasm. A review article published in 2008 also showed that 93% of the test subjects from a sample of 500 women suffering from chronic anorgasmia were able to achieve orgasm with the help of the Magic Wall and the Betty-Dodson method.
reception
Well-known sex therapists, such as Ruth Westheimer , recommend the device to women to improve their sex life. In 1996, the women's magazine Cosmopolitan reported on the Magic Wand as an aid to masturbation. The technology blog Engadget described the Magic Wand as the sex toy with the highest recognition value in the world.
