Hjalmar Fridolf Siilasvuo (born March 18, 1892 in Helsinki , † January 11, 1947 in Liminka ) was a Finnish officer during the Winter War and the Continuation War .

Life

Siilasvuo was the son of a newspaper editor. He received his first military training during the First World War in Germany within the hunter units made up of Finnish volunteers . Siilasvuo worked as a lawyer in the interwar period . Shortly after the start of the Winter War in 1939, he was called up as a reserve officer . With the rank of colonel , he commanded the 9th Division of the Finnish Army at the Battle of Suomussalmi and the Battle of Kuhmo .

After Germany's attack on the Soviet Union in 1941, Siilasvuo commanded the III. Corps on the Karelian Isthmus . Here he and his corps took part in the Silberfuchs company with the aim of reaching the Murman Railway . This goal could not be achieved. On the orders of the Finnish High Command, which in turn was based on diplomatic pressure from the USA, he stopped the attack on November 17, 1941. When Finland made peace with the Soviet Union in 1944 , Siilasvuo commanded the Finnish troops that fought the German units remaining in Finland in the Lapland War . After the end of the war he took command of the first Finnish division.
