As early as 1735 there was a small church consecrated to St. George in the city. It contained various local historical documents.

The construction of the current church on the site of the old church began in 1856, at the time of the Serbian prince Aleksandar Karađorđević and the then Eparchen of the Eparchy Timok Gerasim (Stojković). After eight years of construction, the church was officially consecrated in 1862. At that time, the royal dynasty of the Obrenović ruled Serbia because Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević had to abdicate in 1858.

To this day this church is the only place of worship in Kladovo. The priests of the church organize religious education for children and adults. The church has been extensively renovated inside and out in recent years.
