Hoag's object is an atypical galaxy of the ring galaxy type . The appearance of this object has interested not only amateur astronomers, but also professional astronomers because of its unusual structure . The object was discovered in 1950 by astronomer Art Hoag , who viewed it as a planetary nebula .
An almost perfect circle of young blue hot stars surrounds the older yellow core of this ring galaxy, which is about 540 million light years away in the constellation of Snake .
