Hobart Dotson
Hobart Dotson (* 13. January 1921 in Beloit (Wisconsin) ; † 1. January 1971 ) was an American jazz - trumpet player , composer and arranger of modern jazz .
Live and act
Hobart Dotson played at the beginning of his career around 1945/47 in the orchestras of Billy Eckstine , Gerald Wilson (with whom he made his first recordings), with Wilbert Baranco and in Bill Russo's Big Band (1949); what will be remembered most is his participation in recordings of Sun Ra , Slide Hampton and Charles Mingus , with whom he first worked in 1946 ( West Coast, 1945-49 ).
In 1948 Dotson moved from Los Angeles to Chicago, where he recorded with the Dukes of Swing for Aristocrat (1949); it was followed by sessions with the pianist Johnny Perry for Rondo. He played with Joe Williams and Hal Russell in Jay Burkhart's Bebop Orchestra . In the early 1950s he recorded in the big band of saxophonist Danny Belloc ; in the summer of 1954 he was a member of Horace Henderson's band who played in the Trianon Ballroom . In 1956 he contributed four compositions to a session by Billy Butler for the short-lived Verro label ; In 1957 he recorded with Porter Kilbert at Ping .
Dotson can be heard on Sun Ra's album Jazz in Silhouette (Evidence, 1958) and later on Holiday for Soul Dance (Evidence, 1968/69). In 1961 he was involved in the recording of Slide Hampton's album Slide! involved. In the 1960s he played with Charles Mingus in his big band production Pre-Bird (1960) as well as with a Mingus octet at the Monterey Jazz Festival and subsequent concerts in 1965 ( Music Written for Monterey 1965, Not Heard ... Played in Its Entirety at UCLA ).
According to Weber / Filtgen, his playing is reminiscent of Benny Bailey and Johnny Coles .
