At 943 meters, the Hochberg is one of the smaller mountains in the Bavarian Forest . It is located in the far northwest of the Bavarian Forest National Park and directly above the village of Bayerisch Eisenstein .

Its summit cannot be reached on a marked hiking trail, but on its north side there is the promising high rock (875 m) with a good view of Bayerisch Eisenstein, the Großer Arber and Železná Ruda in the Bohemian Forest .

The Hochfels can be reached in a short time from Bayerisch Eisenstein (accessible by forest railway ). Other hiking trails, including the European long-distance hiking trail E6, lead from Zwieslerwaldhaus and from Gasthaus Schwellhäusl up to the Hochfels.

On the western slope of the Hochberg was the 2.8 hectare Johannisruh nature reserve, which was established in 1939 and was incorporated into the Bavarian Forest National Park in 1997 when it was expanded. This area is characterized by large rock formations.
