The Ankara – Konya high-speed line is a new TCDD line that runs between the capital of Turkey and the industrial center of Konya and was opened at the end of 2010. Commercial operation began on August 24, 2011.

The existing route

Ankara and Konya were the two destinations of the Anatolian Railway , which, coming from İstanbul-Haydarpaşa , connects both cities with a Y-shaped network. This meant that rail travelers had to take the Eskişehir junction before the new line was put into operation at the beginning of 2011 , a major detour. The distance between Ankara and Konya by rail was 687 km, but only 258 km by road. The train journey took 10 ½ hours.

The high-speed line

The new line between Ankara and Konya was built by TCDD for a maximum speed of 250 km / h, equipped with ETCS Level 1 and opened on December 17, 2010. They reduce the distance to 306 km. Operations will start on August 24, 2011, with ten high-speed trains of the HT65000 series from the Spanish manufacturer CAF being used. The trains run on the existing Ankara – Eskişehir high-speed line to a junction between Ankara and Polatlı (93 km) and from there on the new line directly to Konya. The scheduled journey time is 90 minutes. In the future, the travel time is to be reduced by another 15 minutes to 75 minutes. However, since no new vehicles were procured, initially only four pairs of trains could be offered per day, which in no way met the demand.

High-speed rail lines in Turkey

On May 23, 2015, the first Velaro TR high-speed train was put into operation by TCDD and operates six times a day between Ankara and Konya. Another 16 trains of this type are to follow.

Accidents

On the morning of December 13, 2018, the Marşandiz railway accident occurred in the area of the Ankara S-Bahn station of the same name when a high-speed train and an electric locomotive collided head-on. Nine people died.
