Hochland plant in Heimenkirch

The Hochland SE , based in Heimenkirch in Allgäu is a German food company owned by the family and one of the largest private cheese manufacturers in Europe.

history

Georg Summer and Robert Reich founded the Hochland cheese factory in Goßholz near Lindenberg in 1927 . The first product was a 2 kg block of Emmentaler processed cheese. In 1931 the company headquarters were relocated to Heimenkirch. Hochland has been the official partner and cheese supplier of McDonald's Germany since 1973 . The Swiss cheese manufacturer Fromalp, which was taken over in 2006, was sold to Emmi in 2010 .

In January 2017, Hochland acquired the US cream cheese producer Franklin Foods Inc. In 2016, it was the third largest cream cheese manufacturer in the USA with a turnover of around USD 140 million.

activities

Hochland is the market leader for processed cheese in Germany with a market share of 22% (as of 2008). Sales in 2017 amounted to around 348,000 t . The soft cheese division is represented by the French manufacturer Fromagerie Henri Hutin (FHH), which was taken over in 1978; in addition to its main brand Valbrie, FHH also produces private labels. The distribution and marketing of Hochland cheese under private labels is carried out by the subsidiary Bonifaz Kohler GmbH.

Since 1974 machines for processed cheese have also been manufactured by the subsidiary Natec.

In 2015, Hochland founded EVA GmbH , which produces vegan alternatives to cheese and dairy products. The production facility is located in Oberreute . The products are sold under the trade name "Simply V".

Locations

In addition to Heimenkirch, there are other locations, some with production facilities, in Schongau (Germany), Dieue-sur-Meuse (France), Barcelona (Spain), Kaźmierz , Węgrów (both Poland), Bucharest , Sighișoara , Sovata (both Romania), in Raos (in Ramenski rajon near Moscow), Prokhorovka and since the end of 2017 in Belinski (both Russia). Subsidiaries in Amol (Iran) and in Ukraine have meanwhile been sold or closed.

In 2008, Hochland took over the Grünland cheese factory including all rights to the “Grünländer” brand in Kempten (Allgäu) . At that time, “Grünländer” took second place in the sales ranking of all brands in the German hard and semi-hard cheese segment. At the end of 2010 this plant was closed by Hochland and has been idle ever since. Of the 80 employees at the Kempten plant, only six were transferred to the Schongau and Heimenkirch locations.

Hochland is controlled by HOCHLAND Holding GmbH & Co. KG, which is owned by the founding families and based in Heimenkirch.
