Haslach flood retention basin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Haslach flood retention basin was a small flood retention basin on the Haslach in the Biberach district , Baden-Württemberg . It broke in 1969.

Building

In the 1950s, the retention basin was built as a drying basin between the towns of Haslach and Rot an der Rot with a homogeneous dam made of loamy gravel. The catchment area of the building was 40 km² and the usual storage space was 300,000 m³. The dam height above the terrain was approx. 6 m and the width of the dam in the area of the crown was approx. 4.5 m. The bottom outlet had a diameter of 1200 mm and a discharge capacity of 9.5 m³ / s. There was also a flood relief with two openings, each 2.50 m wide, which could be regulated with protection boards. Above Rot there were two more retention basins on Pfaffenriederbach and Ölbach.

Dam break

The dam of the retention basin broke on August 17, 1969, when it was overflowed with extremely high runoffs during a flood caused by heavy rain .

procedure

On the afternoon of August 17th, a thunderstorm front with heavy rain rained down in the catchment area and created a flood that initially caused the water level in the basin to rise. As witnesses reported, the protection panels (locks) were open until around 6:00 p.m. in order to drain away a lot of water via the flood relief. Around this time, at the instigation of the sawmill owner, they were locked to prevent the timber store of the sawmill below from being washed away. As a result, the water level rose more sharply, so that the dam was later overflowed. In the evening - before midnight - the dam broke. The other two retention basins withstood the water masses.

Damage

There were no fatalities, but major property damage. The wood that was washed away from the sawmill closed a street opening and caused a backlog. Because of this, water seeped into the ground floor windows of some houses.

consequences

The dam was not restored. The remains can still be seen today. In the meantime, another retention basin has been built above Haslach, the flood retention basin Rappenbach , and another basin, the flood retention basin Pfaffenrieder Bach.
