The Ober-Ramstadt flood retention basin is located on the Modau in southern Hesse in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district . The Modau flows through the western Odenwald near the Bergstrasse and in the Hessian Rhine plain and flows into the Rhine .

The retention basin is located 300 m south of the outskirts of Ober-Ramstadt . It has a small permanent backwater with a height of five meters, whereby the reservoir is about three hectares in size. In the event of flooding, however, more than 13 hectares are flooded and the storage volume increases from 50,000 to 400,000 m³.

The barrier structure is a zone earth dam with a central core seal. A bored pile wall up to 20 m deep is arranged below the core . The service outlet and the flood relief are located in a common structure, a round tower, in the middle of the dam at the water-side dam foot.

The construction period lasted from February 13, 1990 ( groundbreaking ) to July 29, 1993 (acceptance). On December 9, 1993, the water level was reached 210 m above sea level for the first time. The building cost around 16.4 million DM.

At the inlet of the Modau there is a 1200 m³ large pre- dam with a crown height of 210.60 m above sea level, which is supposed to collect the sediment carried along. The storage space of the main basin was still muddy after a few years. The basin therefore had to be emptied in 2005, and the sludge cleared and disposed of.
