The Hodscha-Gaukuschan-Complex , also called Hodscha-Kalon-Complex , is a building ensemble in the historic old town of Bukhara and with this part of the UNESCO World Heritage . It consists of a madrasa , a mosque and a minaret on one of the stone-enclosed ponds ( Hovuz ) that are typical of the city .

Building ensemble

The building ensemble is located in the historic center of Buxoro about 300 meters south of the Poi Kalon ensemble and 200 meters west of the Toqi Sarrofon commercial dome behind buildings of Russian architecture from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The ensemble is arranged to the west of a stone-lined water pond. The name Gaukuschan (in German the bull beating) goes back to the fact that there was a slaughterhouse at this point until the 16th century .

The complex was built in the 16th century. First a medrese was built at the intersection in 1570. Later a mosque was built north of it on the instructions of the Jurabar - Sheikh Hodscha Sa'ad. It was a Friday mosque called the Hodja Mosque. The official name is Xo'ja Kalon masjidi (Hodscha Kalon Mosque) .

The Schahrud , an ancient stone canal, runs between the madrasah and the mosque . At the edge of the canal, a striking minaret was built next to the mosque. It is a replica of the Kalon minaret , but with a height of 19.5 meters it is considerably smaller than the original. The base has a diameter of 4.8 meters.
