The Hohe Warte is a 253  m high, wooded hill east of Gießen and west of Annerod .

From 1982 it was the location of the patriot position Hohe Warte of the US Army . After the position was given up in 1991, the area was converted to a nature reserve . The nature reserve "Hohe Warte near Gießen" (NSG 26) covers around 168 hectares .

In September 2000, however, the approval was given again to make part of the area with a handling of 66 hectares available as a training area for the US Army.

The remediation of the US landfill from 2004 to 2005 cost the Federal Republic of Germany several million euros.

Przewalski horses on the Hohe Warte

In the spring of 2012, a small herd of Przewalski horses was settled in a paddock on the Hohe Warte as part of the European conservation breeding program.

In May 2013, after a four-week construction period, a 12.4 hectare (4 hectare collector area) solar park was opened on the site. The 5.5 million euro system is to deliver up to six megawatts of electricity and is operated by SJC GmbH from Niedernhall (Baden-Württemberg).
