Already at the Städelschule with Johann Georg Geyger , the artist created his first abstract works, which were replaced by realistic motifs with socially critical content in the 1970s. With the painter Peter Engel, he founded a litho workshop to print his own work in small editions. Here, as in the following period, Herrmann worked serially in groups of works. From 1980, large-format paintings followed ( The Walker , 198, Oil Nessel Wood, 2 panels each 155 × 95 cm, total approx. 155 × 190) and painterly and gestural figurations, also using the graphic printing techniques of etching and woodcut . Almost all of his work was destroyed in a studio fire in December 2009. A painterly new beginning followed with a large-format series of silver pen drawings entitled “Exercises”. At his last exhibition in 2014 in the exhibition hall at Schulstrasse 1a, abstract large-format grisaille pictures were shown under the common title Rauschen . "A gestural painting that organizes itself ..."

In 1986 Herrmann founded the Artothek in Frankfurt, which he managed until 1988. Between 2000 and 2010 he held teaching positions in the art department at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and at the Mainz University of Art . Holger Herrmann lived and worked in the north end of Frankfurt . In 2013 he was awarded the Ilse Hannes Prize.
