Holger Kiesewetter (born November 4, 1947 in Varel ) is a German pathophysiologist and internist and professor of medicine. He was from 1994 to 2009 director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine and immune hematology at the Charité .

Life

Kiesewetter studied mechanical engineering ( aircraft construction ) at RWTH Aachen University from 1967 to 1971 and earned a degree in engineering . From 1973 to 1978 he completed his studies in Human Medicine at RWTH and the Free University of Berlin , where he in 1976 in the Department of Physical Engineering to the doctor engineering doctorate was. In 1979 he received his license to practice medicine and obtained his doctorate in medicine in Aachen in 1980, and in 1982 he completed his habilitation in physiology at RWTH Aachen University. Kiesewetter has been a specialist in internal medicine since 1989 and is recognized as a doctor for blood donation and transfusion (since 1994) and laboratory medicine (1995).

In 1985 Kiesewetter received a rehabilitation for the subject pathophysiology at the Saarland University Clinics, where he worked from 1983 to 1994. From 1994 to 2009 he was director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology at the Charité. In 2010 he founded the specialist medical center “Haemostaeologicum” in Berlin.

Controversy

In March 2009, a controversial study on so-called "Bio-Viagra" caused a sensation, which was carried out by a doctoral student Kiesewetter at the Institute for Transfusion Medicine. The scientific validity of the study was doubted, and the managing directors of the manufacturer of the potency drug were also employees of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine. As a result of the affair, Kiesewetter was given leave of absence from the Charité in September 2009 at his own request. A procedure initiated against Kiesewetter was discontinued by the public prosecutor without filing a lawsuit.

In the 1980s, Kiesewetter, as a senior physician at the Institute for Transfusion Medicine at the University Clinic in Homburg an der Saar, received more than DM 370,000 from the medical technology company Fresenius through his wife's company. Kiesewetter denies the payment, which has been confirmed by the institute. In 1998, under Kiesewetter's direction, a study on the positive effects of garlic on vascular diseases was published, which was accused of scientific flaws in the evaluation. The study was financed by Lichtwer Pharma , which also sells garlic preparations, among other things.

In 2004, Kiesewetter had to repay to the Charité around 960,000 euros, which he had received in his own name for diagnostic services for other hospitals and clinics.

Through the "Immunology Working Group", Kiesewetter recommended a nasal ointment as a "pollen protection cream" for allergy sufferers, for whom, according to the German Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology, there was no scientific proof of effectiveness. The presumed mechanism of action is "adventurous". Black cumin oil was also recommended until 2006 , although in the opinion of the specialist journal “Internistische Praxis” from 2000 it was “an unfounded or scientifically unproven recommendation that ostensibly primarily benefits the manufacturer or seller of black cumin oil”. Also controversial were studies Kiesewetter for influenza - prophylaxis with Zistrosenextrakt.

Kiesewetter's statement in Claudia Pechstein's dispute over doping allegations had also been criticized by other doctors. Kiesewetter had claimed that reticulocyte values could not prove doping and had been paid by Pechstein for his statement.
