Holger Kreft

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Holger Kreft (* 1976 ) is a German biologist and professor at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . His main focus is research in vegetation , nature conservation biology and macroecology .

Life

From 1996 Holger Kreft studied biology and geography at the University of Bonn . In 2000 he spent a semester abroad at Boston University and in 2002 took part in the Tropical Biology Program . He mainly studied botany with the minor subjects zoology and geography. In 2007 he received his doctorate in Bonn to Dr. rer. nat. with Wilhelm Barthlott on Global biodiversity of vascular plants - a macroecological analysis of broad-scale geographic patterns and determinants .

After various projects in Germany and abroad, Kreft was appointed junior professor at the University of Göttingen in 2009 and professor in 2015. He teaches in the forest science courses and heads the Biodiversity, Macroecology & Biogeography department . In 2015 he received the Lower Saxony Science Prize .

Teaching and Research

Holger Kreft works with his research group on global ecological problems. He includes human activities as the main cause (anthropogenic drivers) of ecological, economic and social effects, as well as their effects on the services of ecosystems . In order to be able to estimate the effects of these changes on global biodiversity, Kreft researches the spatial and dispersive ecological aspects of biodiversity. He sees his research as an integrative and interdisciplinary link between macroecology , biogeography , evolutionary biology and biostatistics . In practice, Kreft works with remote sensing data on vegetation cover, abiotic factors and other data sets. Field data on the distribution of animal species and vegetation cover are also used. Analyzes and modeling on different spatial levels, as well as the modeling of different (e.g. based on climatic processes) scenarios are thus possible.

In 2010, Kreft and his colleague Jetz published an article in which he presented revised and more precise distribution maps of the global distribution of species using multivariate methods and modern computer-aided models.

Holger Kreft teaches in the forest science courses of the University of Göttingen and is an active member of the macroecology working group of the GfÖ .
